Voices are like finger prints, each is as unique as the person who speaks with it. You can be walking down a crowded concourse at an airport and hear your brother\/ sister\/friend calling you and immediately you know who it is that\u2019s calling you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not so easy to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. The reason for this is that he speaks in a whisper. It\u2019s a low, brief, quiet speech that we can easily miss if we aren\u2019t paying attention. The second reason it can be hard to hear is because it often sounds just like MY voice. And so sometimes I think I\u2019m hearing God\u2019s will for me when really I\u2019m just hearing myself wanting what I want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every once in awhile you hear deep in your heart \u201ca feeling that has a voice like yours\u201d telling you something you need to hear. It goes like this for me: it starts with a feeling, let\u2019s say frustration. \u201cI\u2019m sick and tired of being the one who makes the peace – – – let someone else get everybody together.\u201d This is MY voice expressing a very familiar frustration with having to put aside MY feelings for the sake of the good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then I hear way down in my mind . . . \u201cTim\u201d (this voice knows me by name). . . and usually a few seconds later . . . \u201cYou know what is needed here; don\u2019t you?\u201d Then MY voice speaks, \u201cYes. I guess so.\u201d Then the Spirit speaks . . . \u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something not to be missed is that there are actually TWO graces happening here. The first is the grace to hear the voice of your conscience (\u201cyou know what is needed here\u201d). The second is to know the source of what you are hearing – – – \u201cHey, this is your conscience speaking to you. Listen up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how can we tell which voice we\u2019re hearing, our own or the Holy Spirit? Here are some pointers to hearing God\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> God\u2019s voice usually invites us to put ourself second to someone or something that needs help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> When we hear the voice of the Holy Spirit there is a feeling of \u201cbeing reminded of something we already know deep in our heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> God\u2019s voice carries with it a personal note. What I\u2019m hearing has a feeling of \u201cbeing meant for me\u201d in this time, in this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> God\u2019s voice is persistent. It keeps coming back even when we may flee. It can feel like it\u2019s pursuing us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> If what we are about to do (or have done) is good and virtuous, God\u2019s voice is usually quiet and peaceful. \u201cGood.\u201d It says. If however we are contemplating some- thing sinful, the voice\/feeling is generally loud and insistent. \u201cStop this!\u201d or \u201cNo. This is wrong!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> God\u2019s voice generally asks me to \u201csurrender\u201d to \u201cgive in\u201d. It must have been what Jesus heard in the Garden that night, \u201cBut not my will Lord, thine be done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

+<\/strong> There is generally a peace that comes over us that tells us what we\u2019re hearing or feeling comes from a place (person) that loves us and speaks goodness to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Lord . . . help me to find a quiet space in my day. Help me to quiet the world. Ask for the grace to hear His whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
