We pray each day, \u201cThy Kingdom come. Thy will be done.\u201d Jesus tells us, \u201cwhoever does the will of my Father is brother and sister to me.\u201d (Matthew 12:50<\/a>). And he himself, that terrible night in the garden prayed, \u201cNot my will, but thine be done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the question is, what does God want? What is His will for us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here begins the long story of the human race and the tragic results of not doing God\u2019s will. Remember the Garden with Adam and Eve. God\u2019s will was filled with many wonderful commands: \u201cbe fertile and multiply (have lots of kids!)\u201d \u201cHave dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air and every living thing.\u201d (Genesis 1:26<\/a>) God\u2019s wish is that we be master of all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However . . . our dominion was to be exercised in obedience to God\u2019s will. \u201cYou are free to eat of any of the trees in the garden but do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.\u201d You know the story; we disobeyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? We had everything we could want. A wonderful partner for life, food galore, and best of all . . . friendship with our Maker. What happened to make us disobey? Adam and Eve say they were \u201ctricked\u201d. The Tempter (aka. the devil) got them thinking that God\u2019s way was unfair. \u201cYou won\u2019t die,\u201d said the serpent. \u201cYou will become like God!\u201d And God doesn\u2019t want you to be his equal, we could add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since then, we humans have had this feeling that God is not to be trusted; that He wants to keep us under His thumb! Somehow we got it into our heads that God was a grumpy taskmaster that didn\u2019t want us to be happy or free. When we take the time to even think about it, we feel God saying, \u201cDon\u2019t do that or that or that!\u201d God is no fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is all part of the devil\u2019s trick. He wants to turn us away from God\u2019s plan for us; to doubt that He even cares about us. (I bet you\u2019ve had these feelings).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is exactly why God sent His Son \u0016 \u0016 to show us who He is, and to correct our understanding of God. Jesus spent his whole life trying to get us to see what God is like. He tells us to call Him \u201cFather\u201d. Parable after para- ble tell of His love for us, His forgiveness, the plan to share His divine nature with by accepting Christ into our life. God is offering us Eternal Life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, we need to ask a question here. It\u2019s about your REAL<\/strong> happiness. Haven\u2019t you found that when you put yourself aside to meet the needs of others, when you\u2019ve been generous with your time, your kindness, your truthfulness, that you discover a happiness \u201cthe world cannot take away\u201d? It\u2019s a feeling that might be described as \u201cclean\u201d or \u201cright with God\u201d or (if you\u2019re a theologian!) \u201cintegral\u201d. It\u2019s a happiness that brings peace and gentleness and self control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let\u2019s go back to that garden where Jesus, filled with fear, surrenders to his Father\u2019s will. It certainly was not a moment of peace and happiness. It was a moment of TRUST<\/strong> and OBEDIENCE<\/strong>. Jesus trusted in His Father\u2019s plan of salvation for humankind. He trusted that, somehow, through the selfless offering of his life on the cross, there would be the manifestation of GOD WHO IS LOVE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True to His Son\u2019s word, God the Father raised Christ from the dead to be \u201cthe first fruits of all who have died . . so too shall all be brought to life.\u201d 1 Corinthians 15: 20\u0016-23<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life with God forever in Christ. How\u2019s that for happy? God\u2019s will is our peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
