What&#8217;s That?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wpimg\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.holytrinityweb.com\/weekly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/w_wonder.jpg\" alt=\"The Church\" class=\"wp-image-7235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holytrinityweb.com\/weekly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/w_wonder.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.holytrinityweb.com\/weekly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/w_wonder-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.holytrinityweb.com\/weekly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/w_wonder-500x314.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.holytrinityweb.com\/weekly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/w_wonder-624x392.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the word \u201clove\u201d, but to a lesser degree, we use the word \u201cchurch\u201d in so many ways that it\u2019s hard to get to its deepest meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We say things like: \u201cI\u2019m going to church\u201d, \u201cWas it a church wedding?\u201d, \u201cThe church has spoken\u201d, etc. Our most frequent thought about church is as a building or an organization (not unlike a company). It has a president (Pope) and field managers (bishops and pastors). It has rules and regulations for those who \u201cbelong\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this has some truth to it but, taken by itself, one is left with an entirely poor understanding of Church. So poor in fact that many, especially young people, choose to go elsewhere for an organization that gives them meaning and direction. \u201cI\u2019m spiritual but not religious\u201d, they say. They accept a false understanding of church (though sometimes it seems justified by the actions of some church leaders).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What then is a correct understanding of \u201cChurch\u201d? Here\u2019s what the bible says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jesus started the Church. Peter declares Jesus the Son of God and in turn Jesus says, \u201cBlessed are you Peter (for what you believe) and I declare you are \u201cRock\u201d, and on this rock I will build my church . . . and the jaws of death will not overcome it\u201d. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/16?18\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/16?18\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 16:18<\/a><\/li><li>Jesus said, \u201cTeach them all that I have commanded you and know I am with you always until the end of time.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/28?20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/28?20\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 28:20<\/a><\/li><li>Jesus sends the Holy Spirit \u201cwho will guide you into all truth.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/16?13\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/16?13\" target=\"_blank\">John 16:13<\/a><\/li><li>He sends his believers into the world, \u201cHe who hears you, hears me.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/25?40\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/25?40\" target=\"_blank\">Matt 25:40<\/a><\/li><li>St. Paul says each of us are members of the Body of Christ <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/12?27\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/12?27\" target=\"_blank\">1 Corinthians 12:27<\/a><\/li><li>Christ is the head of this body . . . the Church.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/colossians\/1?18\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/colossians\/1?18\" target=\"_blank\">Colossians 1:18<\/a><\/li><li>Jesus gives us His body (the Eucharist) which is \u201cour participation in the Body of Christ.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/10?16\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/10?16\" target=\"_blank\">1 Corinthians 10:16<\/a><\/li><li>The Church is also the Bride of Christ, united to Jesus, her spouse, as the body is united to the head. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/5?23\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/5?23\" target=\"_blank\">Ephesians 5:23<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Theologians and saints have reflected on these scriptures and have since given us a \u201cfuller understanding of \u201cChurch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Church is both Divine (in Christ, it shares in the life of God) and human (you and me, the people of faith). The Church is therefore holy . . . and at the same time imperfect and at times sinful (you and me!)<\/li><li>The Church literally brings us the living, Resurrected Christ \u0016 \u0016 in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, when proclaiming of the gospel,and in the charity pouring forth from its members.<\/li><li>The Church is a sacrament (a visible sign, given by Christ, that brings God\u2019s sanctifying grace to humankind.)<\/li><li>Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Church teaches without error what God has revealed for our salvation.<\/li><li>At the end of time the Church, having done its job on earth (being the visible Body of Christ in time and history), will be united to the Risen Lord in such a way that all will <strong>BE CHRIST<\/strong>. Then Christ will be subjected to the Father so that \u201cGod will be all in all.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/15?28\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/15?28\" target=\"_blank\">1 Corinthians 15:28<\/a> Wow!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the next time you \u201cgo to church\u201d, try to remember it\u2019s the Living Body of Christ that you are visiting. And some- day, united in the mystical body of Christ, we will look upon the face of God. No pews in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bless you. <br>Fr.
