When I was a kid reading wasn\u2019t at the top of my\nlist of favorite things. I preferred baseball, marbles,\nand climbing trees. Reading was for school and the\nrare basketball story where the team won the state\nchampionship against all odds.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seminary, of course, was a whole bunch of reading. We read books on sacred scripture, Christian Anthropology, dogma, Church history, moral ethics etc. I studied hard and enjoyed much of what I read. But the \u201chabit\u201d of reading never caught on. The peace and contentment of reading words that in- structed or inspired was a pleasure unknown to me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now, older and less concerned with \u201cproving\nmyself\u201d, I\u2019ve found a whole world out there through\nbooks. I\u2019m no voracious reader (Fr. John is!) but\nI\u2019ve enjoyed this new kind of recreation.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this to say I\u2019d like to share with you some of the\nwonderful thoughts about God and human beings\nthat I\u2019ve come across the last couple years.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the bulletin from time to time there will be a paragraph or two from something I feel is particularly on point. The authors will be mainly theologians . . . cause that\u2019s what I like to read! We\u2019ll call it \u201cSpiritual Masters<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. <\/em><\/strong>Here\u2019s the first one. Hope you enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual Masters …God as a Pers<\/em><\/strong>on <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod is not a universal mathematical formula. He is not just an omniscient present spirit in the world. He is not the \u2018harmony of nature\u2019, or an infinity that can not be named. He is the origin of all harmony. The Living One, the Lord.\u201d <\/p>

\u201cGod has all the essential characteristics of what we mean by a \u2018person\u2019 . . . conscious awareness, the ability to recognize, and the ability to love. He is someone who can speak and who can listen. That is what I think is essential about God.\u201d <\/p>
