Something that gives me comfort in the\nmidst of our current world and national turmoil is the\nrealization that some things are just out of my control.\nI\u2019m not off the hook by any means. I must do my part.\nBut how this all turns out &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; that\u2019s in God\u2019s hands.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what are those issues that cause you to wonder just\nwhere this world is headed? What keeps you up at night\nworrying about the future your child or grandchild will\nexperience?\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll bet it\u2019s one of these:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The possible impeachment of our president . . . and the radical polarization of the American people to- ward each other. <\/li><li>The critical issue of foreign interference in our elections past and future. <\/li><li>The serious instability of Mid-East nations &#8211; Syria, Iran, Ukraine. <\/li><li>The nearly 3 million refugees currently seeking safety from corruption, war and hopeless poverty. <\/li><li>Our broken immigration policy at the Southern Border and the haunting vision of parents and children being separated. <\/li><li>The growing breach between rich and poor. (3% of the world\u2019s population holds 85% of the world\u2019s wealth.) <\/li><li>Can we add . . . the Opioid Crisis, the Catholic Clergy Abuse Scandal? . . . and just for fun let\u2019s throw in Global Climate Change.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each one of these problems taunt us with their seeming insolvability. So what are we to do? Is there some foothold that stops this downward spiral? Has God abandoned us? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>No. He has not abandoned us. And yes, He gave us foothold, (actually a rock!) against which \u201cthe jaws of death will not prevail.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mt. 16:18 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/16:18\" target=\"_blank\">Mt. 16:18<\/a>. It is the rock of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what does this gospel say about all our troubles? Several things. First we ought not be surprised by the problems of life and human history. Jesus tells us, \u201cIn the world you will have trouble. But take courage. I have overcome the world.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/16:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Jn. 16:33 (opens in a new tab)\">Jn. 16:33<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s it in a nutshell really. God\u2019s plan for the world has\nalready been secured. He has overcome the world by\nChrist\u2019s death and Resurrection.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no power on earth that can overcome the will of\nGod to save the human race. Period.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future (though there will be suffering along the way)\nhas been won. Think of it. All the forces of darkness and\nsin gathered in one horrible day, and killed the King of\nLove. In fact the enemy of Christ is still at work in the\nworld (see the list above). But it\u2019s a losing battle . . . the\nlove of God is the supreme and final reality. Death is\novercome by a Love that is God Eternal.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However . . . the story (with its victorious ending) isn\u2019t over. It needs you and me to do our duty. The final end of history will not happen without our imperfect cooperation. God wants us to share in the story He\u2019s already completed! \u201cSeek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/6:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mt. 6:33, 34 (opens in a new tab)\">Mt. 6:33, 34<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a real act of Faith, isn\u2019t it? (We don\u2019t have the slightest notion of how this will turn out &#8211; only that God\u2019s plan wins.) To trust in a victory that\u2019s already happened; but one I cannot yet see. This Faith brings about the second great virtue &#8211; &#8211; Hope. (Read the beautiful passage of St. Paul in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Romans 8:18-25 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/8:18\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 8:18-25<\/a>), \u201cAnd so we boast of the hope we have of sharing God\u2019s glory . . . and this hope does not disappoint (in spite of life\u2019s sorrows) for God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who is God\u2019s gift to us.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/5:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Romans 5:5 (opens in a new tab)\">Romans 5:5<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We never give up hope. Never! Why? Because Christ has\nwon the victory. Human history will complete itself in\nGod\u2019s good time. And when it does, you, who have\nlonged for its coming, you battle scarred and wounded\nfaithful, you will shout for joy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us each do our part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fr.
