The steely determination of parents as  they sacrifice for their children. Nervous newly engaged couples  approaching the church to plan their wedding. A stay in the hospital  tends to bring out anyone\u2019s true colors. We priests see it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But  the ones that touch me the most are our young children and teens.  They\u2019re so \u201cout there\u201d, so new and raw, so . . . wonderfully goofy.  Let\u2019s\u00a0 marvel for a moment at our young ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn\u2019t it kill you when . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They  smile that kid\u2019s smile. It\u2019s radiant without their knowing it. The  smile doesn\u2019t have the slightest notion of what we know (that heartache  isn\u2019t too far down the road.) \u201cOh,\u201d we say, \u201cIf only they could stay  here.\u201d So beautiful.<\/li><li>A young person shows off some talent or favorite activity getting friends or family to smile and applaud.<\/li><li>The girls break into singing the current youth \u201canthem\u201d at a party or game. They\u2019re so free in that happy way.<\/li><li>The boys power down unbelievable amounts of spaghetti and get hungry 20 minutes later.<\/li><li>The whole school turns out for a prayer service for one of their sick class mates.<\/li><li>They try putting on some idea of adult behavior just to see how it feels.<\/li><li>They collapse in tears and fall into your arms . . . and still want you near them.<\/li><li>After  days of whining and selfishness they come out of themselves and do  something amazingly thoughtful for someone. \u201cYay! It\u2019s working!\u201d,  parents think for a moment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t you wish you could . . . . . you know . . . control their lives!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Spare them the hurt you know life eventually hands out?<\/li><li>Let them see what you see in them (how wonderful they are)?<\/li><li>Give them the confidence they need without them having to earn it through trial and error?<\/li><li>Choose their friends?<\/li><li>Spare them bad, impulsive choices?<\/li><li>Find the perfect job, boyfriend, girlfriend, room-mate?<\/li><li>Get them to experience God\u2019s Spirit working in their life?<\/li><li>Ensure their happiness and safety throughout their lives?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh how we want to live their lives for them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>So the question for parents and grand-parents is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do  you think God loves these children less than you? He made them!! He  loved them so much He gave each of them a unique personality, style, and  soul. To top it off. . . God gave them YOU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S<\/strong>o  what\u2019s your part in their life now? Here they are, physically grown,  and old enough to make their own choices. So many choices out there; so  many voices calling them to follow. They need you to witness to your  belief in the goodness of life. They need you to show them why you  continue to hope in spite of trouble and darkness . . . why you pray,  why you believe in the goodness of people. Why you follow Christ.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus  may have been thinking of teenagers when he said, \u201cWatch the wild  flowers grow . . . they neither spin nor worry . . . yet not even King  Solomon is as beautiful as these. Won\u2019t God be sure to watch over you?\u201d  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/12:27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Luke 12: 27-28 (opens in a new tab)\">Luke 12: 27-28<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT!\u00a0\u00a0 Teach these young ones to \u201cSeek FIRST my will in their life,\u201d says the Lord. \u201cAnd these other things will come to pass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s God\u2019s part? \u201cTake courage.\u201d He says. \u201cI have overcome the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is with you. Trust Him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fr.
