I wrote some time ago that I\u2019d be sharing some\nreflections on \u201clife\u201d and \u201cfaith\u201d and \u201cculture\u201d\nfrom some really smart and holy persons. I\u2019ve\nfailed to do that!\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here\u2019s a reboot of that promise called\n\u201cSpiritual Masters\u201d.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are two little passages from The Essence of Prayer<\/a> <\/strong>by Ruth Burrows OCD. We so often think of God as infinite in power, all knowing, with holiness unbounded. Here she describes God as having a self-sacrificing nature as part of His very being. Wonderfully shocking when you think about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stand in awe of the self-sacrificing \u2018folly\u2019 of God\u2019s love for us. When God becomes human (Jesus) it is as the sacrificed one, the one who lays down his life in love. \u201cWhoever has seen me has seen the Father.\u201d (Jn 14.9<\/a>) Can we not say God sacrificed Himself in creating the world and becoming our God? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is as if self<\/em>–<\/em>sacrifice \u2013 which, after all, is the\nlaw of all genuine love \u2013 lies in the depths of the\nDivine Reality who is Love.\n<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be taken into that Love, to live with the life of\nGod, must mean that sacrifice becomes our way\nof being too. God loved the world so much that\nhe held nothing back from us, not even his own\nSon. P. 84\n<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we want to know God, we must look at Jesus\ncrucified. We must gaze and gaze, not so much\non the suffering, but on a love that is absolute.\nThis is God; this is what God is really like. P. 46\n<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then . . . daily, secretly in prayer, in the gray\nsimple moments of everyday life, we let that\nsacrificial love that is God, be our way of living\ntoo.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That \u201cfoolish\u201d Love of God is poured out on us at every moment but most especially in the Eucharist when God takes our offering of bread and wine (a representation of ourselves) and returns to us His crucified and risen Son\u2014which is the Father\u2019s love for us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
