Not to sound overly dramatic, but I don\u2019t see how any\nhuman being can stay faithful to a life promise\n(marriage, priesthood, doctor, president, pope) without at\nsome time \u201csaying a prayer\u201d.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think of my priesthood. Oh, I could have stayed a priest\nwithout praying, I guess. The perks are pretty good (free\nroom and board, heated garage, pretty vestments). But\nwithout prayer, over time you become a shell of a priest,\njust going through the motions.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husbands and wives, you know this too; anyone who tries to commit themselves to a project or a promise sooner or later runs out of gas. The promise you made way back now seems impossible or perhaps in your frustration it appears \u201cunimportant\u201d. \u201cWhy should I spend anymore sweat and tears on this darned thing that never seems to get any better?\u201d Been there? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

So why is prayer the answer to being \u201cout of gas\u201d? Because it reconnects us to the source of love and faithfulness . . . God. It takes us out of our empty, exhausted, defeated selves and lets us become children again. It lets us experience our neediness without embarrassment. Prayer calls out to God, who Himself has promised to watch over and help us in our times of trouble and emptiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome to me,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cAll you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.\u201d (Mt. 11:28<\/a>) \u201cPour out your hearts to the Lord.\u201d (Psalm 62<\/a>) \u201cYour Father in heaven knows your need, even before you ask.\u201d (Mt. 6:8<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it\u2019s been a long time. I\u2019ve been away from my childhood religion. I feel like I\u2019m lost in a forest; how do I start praying like an adult? Do I rattle off a couple Our Fathers and Hail Mary\u2019s? Okay. That\u2019s a start. But there is so much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
