Prayers of the Saints

Evening Prayer of Saint Augustine

(13 November 354 – 28 August 430)

View

Watch, Lord, with those who wake or weep tonight. Give the angels and saints charge over those who sleep. O Lord Jesus Christ, tend your sick ones, rest Your weary ones, bless Your dying ones, soothe the suffering ones, pity all the afflicted ones, shield the joyful ones, and all for Your love’s sake. Amen.

Prayer of Saint Basil the Great

(330 – January 379)

O God and Lord of the Powers, and Maker of all creation,
Who, because of Thy clemency and incomparable mercy,
didst send Thine Only-Begotten Son and our Lord Jesus
Christ for the salvation of mankind, and with His venerable
Cross didst tear asunder the record of our sins, and thereby
didst conquer the rulers and powers of darkness;

Receive from us sinful people, O merciful Master, these
prayers of gratitude and supplication, and deliver us from
every destructive and gloomy transgression, and from all
visible and invisible enemies who seek to injure us.

Nail down our flesh with fear of Thee, and let not our
hearts be inclined to words or thoughts of evil, but pierce
our souls with Thy love, that ever contemplating Thee,
being enlightened by Thee, and discerning Thee, the
unapproachable and everlasting Light, we may unceasingly
render confession and gratitude to Thee: The eternal Father,
with Thine Only-Begotten Son, and with Thine All-Holy,
Gracious, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto
ages of ages.

Prayer of Saint Columba

(7 December 521 – 9 June 597)

View

Alone with none but thee, my God,
I journey on my way.
What need I fear when thou art near,
Oh king of night and day?
More safe am I within thy hand
Than if a host did round me stand.

Prayer of Saint Ephrem

(c. 306 – 9 June 373)

View

O Lord and Master of my life, spare me from the spirit of apathy and meddling, of idle chatter and love of power. Instead, grant to me, your servant, the spirit of integrity and humility, of patience and love. Yes, O Lord and God, grant me the grace to be aware of my sins and not to judge others, for you are blessed, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Prayer of Saint Gertrude the Great

(6 January 1256 – 1302)

View

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of Love.
You are my refuge and my sanctuary.
O my adorable and loving Savior, consume my heart with the burning fire with which Yours is aflamed.
Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love.
Let my heart be united with Yours.
Let my will be conformed to Yours in all things.
May Your Will be the rule of all my desires and actions.

Prayers of Saint Ignatius Of Loyola

( 23 October 1491 – 31 July 1556)

View

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous;
Teach me to serve thee as thou deservest;
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to seek for rest,
To labour and not to seek reward,
Save that of knowing that I do thy will.

Suscipe (from the Latin word “receive”)

Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will.
All that I am and all that I possess, Thou hast given me: I surrender it all to Thee to be disposed of according to Thy will.
Give me only Thy love and Thy grace; with these I will be rich enough and will desire nothing more.
Amen.

Prayer of Saint John Neumann

( 28 March 1811 – 5 January 1860)

View

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your Fragrance everywhere I go. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through me and be so in me, that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your Presence in my soul: let them look up and see no longer me — but only Jesus.

Prayer of Saint Richard of Chichester

(1197 – 3 April 1253)

View

Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits thou hast given me,
for all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me.
O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,
may I know thee more clearly,
love thee more dearly,
and follow thee more nearly, day by day.
Amen.

Prayer of Saint Teresa of Avila

(28 March 1515 – 4 October 1582)

View

Lord, grant that I may always allow myself to be guided by you, always follow your plans, and perfectly accomplish your holy will. Grant that in all things, great and small, today and all the days of my life, I may do whatever you may require of me. Help me to respond to the slightest prompting of your grace, so that I may be your trustworthy instrument, for your honor. May your will be done in time and eternity-by me, in me, and through me. Amen.

Morning Prayer of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux

(2 January 1863 – 30 September 1897)

View

O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to Its infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of Its Merciful Love.

O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear, the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day be united together in heaven for all Eternity. Amen.

Prayers of Saint Thomas Aquinas

(1225 – 7 March 1274)

View

Grant me grace, O merciful God, to desire ardently all that is pleasing to You, to examine it prudently, to acknowledge it truthfully, and to accomplish it perfectly, for the praise and glory of Your name. Amen.

Loving God, who sees in us nothing that you have not given yourself, make my body healthy and agile, my mind sharp and clear, my heart joyful and contented, my soul faithful and loving. And surround me with the company of men and angels who share my devotion to you. Above all, let me live in your presence, for with you all fear is banished, and there is only harmony and peace. Let every day combine the beauty of spring, the brightness of summer, the abundance of autumn, and the repose of winter. And at the end of my life on earth, grant that I may come to see and to know you in the fullness of your glory.

Prayer of “Saint” Clement of Alexandria

(c. 150 – c. 215)

View

Be kind to your little children, Lord. Be a gentle teacher, patient with our weakness and stupidity. And give us the strength and discernment to do what you tell us, and so grow in your likeness. May we all live in the peace that comes from you. May we journey towards your city, sailing through the waters of sin untouched by the waves, borne serenely along by the Holy Spirit. Night and day may we give you praise and thanks, because you have shown us that all things belong to you, and all blessings are gifts from you. To you, the essence of wisdom, the foundation of truth, be glory for evermore.
